How Much Photo Storage Do You Need? Work It Out
Estimate capacity from your media size, growth and shared account usage with three worked examples.
Estimate from the size of your own files, not a universal number of photos. Video length, format and image quality can change the answer substantially.

Files you will store + expected growth + other account usage + spare room.
Then choose an available capacity above the total. The examples below are planning illustrations, not predictions or recommended subscription tiers.
Calculate your needs
- Check the size of the photos and videos you actually want online. With optimized iPhone photos, the local Photos figure may be smaller than the full cloud library.
- Estimate growth from your own recent uploads. If you cannot measure a typical month, start with your current library and reassess after using the service.
- Add other data sharing the allowance, such as documents, email or device backups.
- Leave spare room for a trip, imports or larger videos. Choose the amount based on your likely use rather than a fixed percentage.
Do not count an existing uploaded library twice: decide whether your starting figure is the full intended library or only new files being added.
Compare three examples
- Occasional photos: 12 GB now + 1 GB each month for 12 months + 5 GB of other files = 29 GB, before spare room.
- Growing family library: 60 GB now + 3 GB each month for 12 months + 10 GB of other usage = 106 GB, before spare room.
- Video-heavy collection: 180 GB now + 10 GB each month for 12 months + 20 GB of other files = 320 GB, before spare room.
If your calculated total is close to a plan limit, allow more room or shorten the planning period. There is no need to buy years of unused capacity upfront.
Before choosing a plan
Check the provider’s current capacity, renewal price and what shares the allowance. Also confirm the intended upload quality: changing quality to save space may affect your originals.
A bigger plan does not enlarge phone storage. Follow the phone versus cloud explanation before expecting more room on the device.
Check the result
After the first complete upload, compare actual usage with the estimate. Recalculate when you start recording larger videos, import an old library or share the account allowance. Review your backup setup as well as the number of gigabytes.
