Back Up Android Photos Before You Delete
Check accounts, folders and completed photo uploads before freeing Android device space.
Do not delete wanted photos just because they appear in a backup app. Confirm the correct account, completed uploads and a copy you can open first.
Back up with Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture. Confirm the Google Account where you want your photos stored.
- Open Photos settings → Backup and turn backup on. Check the upload quality and available account space.
- Review Back up device folders if you also need screenshots or WhatsApp media. Camera backup does not mean every device folder is included.
- Keep a reliable connection and wait for Backup complete. If uploads are paused, waiting for Wi-Fi or out of space, stop here.
- On another device or at photos.google.com, sign in to that account and open recent photos and videos. Include examples from every folder you intend to clear.

Remove device copies, not your library
After verification, open profile picture → Free up space on this device and review the proposed removal. Let that feature identify backed-up device items; opening a few sample uploads is not a reason to bulk-delete other originals. Ordinary Delete can remove items from your Google Photos library.
The removed device copies will no longer be available in an offline gallery. Keep local copies of anything you need without internet. Follow the official Android free-space instructions.
If backup cannot finish
Check account capacity, network access and photo permissions. Do not delete the only originals to make the upload complete. You can copy files to a computer instead, then open those copies before removing sources.
Check the result
Return to Android Settings → Storage. A completed upload alone does not reclaim local space; the local-removal step does. If you keep only the cloud copy, it is now your only copy-consider a second independent copy for irreplaceable media.
For a different service, use its own deletion instructions rather than assuming it works like Google Photos. Compare backup and sync.
