Free Up Android Space: What to Remove First
A focused Android cleanup sequence with checks before deletion and after each change.
Start with the largest category, not a cleaner app. Keep anything you cannot replace until you have checked another copy.
Start here
- Open Settings → Storage. If the label differs, search Settings for “storage.” Note the free space and largest category.
- For apps, open Settings → Apps → the app → Storage or Storage & cache. Remove offline downloads inside the app first. Clear cache removes temporary data; Clear storage/data can erase settings, sign-ins and local work.
- For files, open Downloads in your file manager. Preview old installers, exports and documents before selecting only what you no longer need.
- For photos or videos, follow the Android photo backup steps before removing wanted originals. A computer copy is also an option: open the copied files before deleting their sources.
- Return to Storage and compare the free-space figure after it updates.
Choose the right tool
- Chat media: use WhatsApp Manage storage so you can review items by conversation.
- Large files you cannot locate: follow the large-file guide. Files by Google is optional, not required if your existing file manager does the job.
- Other: use the Other storage checklist; do not delete unfamiliar folders.
Before you confirm
Deleting a large file is not automatically a safe choice. Check its contents and whether it is your only copy. Read whether the confirmation moves it to Trash or deletes it permanently; recovery is not guaranteed.
Check the result
If space barely changes, check the storage category again. Files still in a trash folder may retain space, while caches can rebuild. Only empty trash after reviewing its contents and verifying anything important elsewhere. Do not keep deleting unrelated files to chase a fixed number.
Menu names vary by phone. Google’s Android storage help explains the distinction between cache and app data.
