Google Drive: Save Files Before Clearing Phone Space
Upload selected files, verify their contents and distinguish cloud deletion from local cleanup.
Google Drive fits selected documents, scans and videos you want to access online. It is not a complete phone backup or a promise of automatic camera uploads.
Upload and verify
- Open Drive and check the account.
- Tap New (+) → Upload and choose the file; on some versions choose File upload. Wait for completion.
- Open that file at drive.google.com or on another device using the same account. Check its contents before changing the source.

Before removing the source
Deleting the uploaded item inside Drive removes the cloud item, not just your original phone file. To free source-file space, manage the original in the relevant local file manager after verification.
A Drive file marked available offline is another local copy. Turn off its offline availability when you no longer need offline access; do not choose Remove/Delete as a substitute.
On iPhone, choosing a photo for upload does not make Apple-library deletion safe for iCloud. Use the photo removal checklist first.
Check the result
Confirm the uploaded file remains accessible, then compare device storage. Uploading alone leaves the source in place.
Drive shares Google Account capacity with Photos and Gmail. Check available space before a large transfer. If this leaves only one copy online, keep a second independent copy of irreplaceable files.
