Google Photos: Back Up First, Free Space Next
Set up photo backup and understand the different device-cleanup steps for Android and iPhone.
Google Photos can back up photos and videos, then help remove backed-up device copies. Its normal Delete action is not the same as freeing local space.
Start with backup
- Tap your profile picture and check the Google Account.
- Open Photos settings → Backup, enable it and check available space. On Android, review additional device folders you want included.
- Wait for Backup complete, then open representative photos and videos at photos.google.com in that account.
If uploads are paused or files are missing, do not delete the originals.
Before freeing space
- Android: use profile picture → Free up space on this device after verification. Follow the Android backup steps.
- iPhone: the free-space workflow removes device items from the Apple library and involves Recently Deleted. If iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple-library deletion also affects iCloud. Read the iPhone checklist first.
- Both: using ordinary Delete can remove a Google Photos library item. Do not use it as a substitute for device cleanup.
Removed local copies may not be accessible offline or in the device’s normal gallery.
Check the result
Verify files still open at the online destination, then recheck device storage. A completed upload alone does not increase free space.
Your Google Account capacity is shared with other Google services such as Drive and Gmail. Check the actual allowance and upload quality in your account. For irreplaceable media, keep an independent copy rather than relying on a single library.
