Proton Drive: Start Encrypted Photo Backup
Start encrypted photo backup, check capacity and prepare recovery before clearing local originals.
Proton Drive offers encrypted file storage and photo backup. It is an option when you want this privacy feature, not a tool that automatically clears phone storage.
Start photo backup
- Sign in to the intended Proton account and open the Photos area in Proton Drive.
- Enable photo backup and grant access to the media you want copied.
- Check the network and available account capacity, then wait for uploads.
- Open representative photos and videos in the destination account before removing any sources.
Use Proton’s photo-backup instructions for your platform. Missing files or a storage-limit warning mean you should stop before cleanup.
Before removing local copies
Do not delete the saved item inside Proton Drive to clear only the phone source. On iPhone, Apple-library deletion can also remove items from iCloud Photos; follow the iPhone backup checklist.
Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable files. Set up Proton’s recovery phrase and store it securely outside the account it protects. Password reset by email alone may not recover encrypted files. See the security checklist.
Check the result
Confirm full files open at the destination. Installing the app or seeing thumbnails is not proof that all originals have uploaded.
Free storage is offered as up to 5 GB, with additional capacity unlocked through setup actions; check your actual allowance. See Proton’s plan details. Do not start a transfer larger than the space available.
