Read the iPhone storage chart and choose a next step based on the largest category.
Check iPhone storage before buying more cloud space. The storage chart tells you which action is worth taking.
Check your storage
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the chart and app list to finish calculating. Note the available space and largest category.
- Tap a large app. App Size is the app itself; Documents & Data includes content it keeps.
- Read any storage recommendation before enabling it. Check what will be removed or retained.
Offload App removes the app but keeps its documents and data. Delete App removes the app and associated data. Offloading may therefore recover little space when Documents & Data is the larger part. See Apple’s storage explanation.
Choose your next step
- Photos: use Optimize Photo Storage or review unwanted media.
- Apps and downloads: remove offline content within its app; do not delete an app that holds unsaved work.
- System Data: follow the System Data checklist.
- iCloud warning instead: open the iCloud storage guide. That is a different capacity.
Check the result
After one change, return to iPhone Storage and let it recalculate. Compare the available space, not just the app icon disappearing. If the largest category has not changed, use its specific guide instead of applying every cleanup suggestion.
You do not need to install a storage cleaner just to inspect these figures.
