Make iPhone Photos Use Less Space With Optimize Storage
Set up Optimize iPhone Storage and check syncing without deleting your wanted library.
Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller local versions when space is needed while full-resolution originals stay in iCloud. It does not enlarge the physical storage in your iPhone.
Turn on Optimize
- Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos.
- Enable Sync this iPhone, then choose Optimize iPhone Storage.
- Check that your iCloud account has enough capacity for the library. If it is full, resolve iCloud storage first.
- Keep a reliable connection and check the Photos library’s sync status. Resolve any paused-sync message before assuming originals are stored online.

What to expect
Optimization happens as the device needs space; it is not a button that immediately removes every full-size file. Some originals may remain local. Opening an optimized item at full resolution may require a download.
Do not delete photos from Apple Photos to keep them only in iCloud. With iCloud Photos enabled, library deletions also sync to iCloud and other connected devices.
If space has not decreased
Check sync status, iCloud capacity and the storage category in Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If Photos is not the largest category, use the iPhone storage guide rather than changing more photo settings.
If you want a separate copy outside iCloud, follow backup before removing photos. A second provider is optional, not a prerequisite for Optimize.
Check the result
Confirm the library has synced and compare Photos storage after the system has had time to manage local copies. No fixed saving is guaranteed. Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable originals; a synchronized library is not protection against every deletion.
