iCloud Storage Full? Clear Space or Upgrade?
Identify the largest iCloud category and choose between cleanup, more capacity or a verified transfer.
Check which iCloud category is full before changing your phone. Deleting a local app or installing a cleaner will not expand your iCloud allowance.
Quick answer
Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage or Manage Account Storage. Review the largest category. Your choices are to remove unneeded cloud data, buy enough iCloud capacity, or move selected files elsewhere after verifying them.
Why this happens
- Photos and videos share iCloud capacity with other data.
- Device backups can include current and older devices.
- iCloud Drive, Messages and Mail can also use the allowance.

What you can try before installing another app
- Note usage in iCloud settings. Check Recommended for You if offered, but review every suggestion.
- If Backups is largest, identify the device before removing an old backup. Deleting it also turns off iCloud Backup for that device; do not remove your only needed restore copy.
- If Photos is largest, decide whether you actually want fewer photos or need more capacity. Deleting from iCloud Photos also affects the synced library.
- If Drive, Messages or Mail is largest, inspect specific large files or attachments. Save wanted items separately before removal.
- Return to iCloud settings and check available capacity, then verify that the affected backup or sync can complete.
Do not disable backup for important app data merely to reduce the number. That changes what you can restore.
Back up selected files elsewhere
Another provider does not add iCloud space or replace every Apple device-backup feature. It can hold selected media or documents while you keep a suitable iCloud setup for the rest.
Before deleting any source, complete the copy and open full files at the destination. If your iPhone uses optimized photos, a local thumbnail is not proof that the original was transferred.

Quick decision: cleanup, upgrade or move?

Upgrade iCloud: suitable when you want to keep the current Apple workflow and need capacity for it. Check the current price and allowance in Settings.
Move selected files: suitable when another destination fits those files. Budget for the transfer and verify copies before deleting sources; it is not an instant repair for device backup.

Can I keep device backup in iCloud and photos elsewhere?
Yes, but configure each deliberately. A photo service does not restore all phone settings and app data, and its uploads must be verified independently.
Does Optimize reduce iCloud usage?
No. It manages local iPhone copies; full originals still occupy iCloud space.
What if space is available but backup still fails?
Read the specific backup error and check the connection and account. Use Apple’s backup support rather than deleting more unrelated data.
