WhatsApp Taking Too Much Space? Clear Unwanted Media
Review large WhatsApp media, keep important copies and prevent unwanted downloads from building up.
Start inside WhatsApp, where you can see which conversations and media use space. Avoid deleting whole chats when only a few unwanted videos are the problem.

What you can try before installing another app
- Open Manage storage and inspect large items or a chat’s media.
- Preview the files. Save wanted photos, documents and videos to a separate destination before selecting them for removal.
- Open those saved copies to confirm they work.
- Read the deletion dialog carefully. Select only the media you intend to remove, including any offered option affecting gallery copies.
- Recheck WhatsApp’s usage and Android Settings → Storage.

A file manager complements the chat view; it does not show which conversation matters to you.
Back up important media separately
A WhatsApp chat backup and an independently saved photo or document serve different purposes. Do not assume a future chat restore will recover media you deliberately removed.

Open Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download and review what downloads on mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Limit unwanted categories according to your needs. This controls future downloads; it does not remove old files.

Should I clear WhatsApp app data in Android Settings?
Not as routine media cleanup. Clearing app data can remove local app information and require setup again. Use Manage storage for selected media instead.
Why do WhatsApp and Android show different sizes?
They can account for data differently, and copies may exist elsewhere. Check which Android category remains large before deleting more media.
Can I keep important media without buying cloud storage?
Yes. Save it to a computer or another suitable destination, open the copy, then remove only the unwanted WhatsApp copy. Keep another independent copy of irreplaceable files.
