Why this happens
- Long or high-resolution videos can be large.
- Editing can leave both originals and exports.
- Chat downloads and screenshots add extra media.
- Camera backup may not include every device folder.
What you can try before installing another app
- Open Settings → Storage and confirm photos/videos are the main category.
- In Photos or Gallery, review videos, screenshots and duplicate suggestions if available. Compare similar images before deciding.
- Delete only items you genuinely do not want. If the gallery syncs with a cloud service, its deletions may also affect that library.
- For wanted items, stop deleting and use the backup steps below.
- Check device storage again after each batch instead of clearing the entire library.
Manage local files
Read the large-file steps if you cannot find what is taking space. Do not bulk-delete folders you do not recognize.
Back up before removing device copies
- In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and confirm the account.
- Open Photos settings → Backup. Check available space and the device folders you want included.
- Wait for Backup complete. If uploads are paused or the account is full, do not remove originals.
- Open recent photos, older photos and videos at photos.google.com using the same account.
- Return to the app and use Free up space on this device, reviewing the proposed removal.

Copy important originals to a computer or another storage device and open the copies before removing sources. If you want an online plan, estimate your actual media capacity instead of choosing only by a free-space headline.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clear Trash immediately?
Only after reviewing the items and verifying wanted files elsewhere. Permanent deletion removes a recovery option; it is not a routine first step.
Backup is complete, but storage is unchanged. Why?
Backup and local removal are separate actions. If removal also completed, let Settings recalculate and check whether another category is now the main user of space.
Is one online copy enough?
It may meet your access needs, but it is still one copy. Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable media rather than relying entirely on one account.
